“School Day” at the 2018 Georgia Tiny House Festival offers free admission to pre-registered public, private and homeschooled students and their teachers/chaperones only. Students must be K-12 to attend this free day. Adults must be accompanied by students.

School Day is from 9am to 2pm, and offers a self-guided tour of some of the tiny houses showcased at the festival. Owners, builders and experts will be on hand to show you tiny houses and answer questions. The focus of the day is sharing information with kids! Plan on at least 3 hours to enjoy all the activities we have to offer!

Admission is free, but you must register.

March Homeschool Day: Owl Pellet Dissection

Calling all homeschool students! Unicoi offers a unique learning experience for all ages. Homeschool Day is the First Friday of every month.

March’s lesson will focus on the dissection of owl pellets. Students will get to use a dissection kit to pull bones and other materials from individual owl pellets. After the lesson, a short, optional hike is available. Activities will take place at the Campground Visitor Center.

Cost is $5 per student.

Focus: health, science, exercise, food

Activities at our Healthyville Homeschool Day will include a chef’s demo on healthy eating, Team Body versus Team Germs, where students learn how their bodies work and how they fight off germs, Maker activities that include building your own stethoscope or putting together a spine, creating a “stomach” and seeing how it digests food, and much more.

Homeschool groups, as well as non-home school groups, are always welcome to enjoy the Museum Field Trip program.

The Museum’s Homeschool Days are designed for the unique educational needs of homeschool students who will spend an afternoon enjoying facilitated activities and workshops. Perfect for grade levels K through 4th grade, the Museum Homeschool Days program activities teach important concepts including math, science, language arts, and social studies. Program runs 1:00 PM-4:00 PM.

Tickets are $15 for non-Member children and $5 for Member children. Adults are free.

The tracks will be more in-depth and cover many aspects of our government’s inner workings. Parents and students alike will enjoy and benefit from these classes.

Reptiles Are Not So Slimy

When most people think of reptiles, they think of slinky, slimy creatures; but reptiles are not slimy at all! Turtles, Lizards and Snakes: our reptilian friends are oftentimes misunderstood. We will learn about the characteristics of reptiles, how each of these creatures has it’s own personality and while reptiles should be respected, there is A LOT to love about them as well.

Open to children ages 5- 12 years. This is a drop-off program, but parents may stay if they wish.

This year marks the 85th anniversary of President Roosevelt’s New Deal. Explore the causes of the Great Depression, FDR’s presidency, and the many ways his “alphabet soup” of New Deal programs affected the country.

Admission to Homeschool Days is $8.50 for nonmembers; $6.50 for children of members; and free for adult members. Discounted rates are available for groups with 10 or more children.

Bend, Break, and Twist apart a railroad at this month’s workshop! Experiment with different forms of rail destruction and repair, and learn why railroads were often destroyed during the Civil War.

In this workshop, students will learn about different historical rail destruction techniques and will investigate their own processes of rail destruction. This program will focus on history and engineering.

The Secret Life Aquatic

A hidden world waits for us under the rocks and sands of Mill Creek. Using nets and buckets, we’ll discover creatures that look like aliens and uncover their secret identities. A little water quality testing and detective work will help us understand what these amazing creatures have to tell us about the health of our waterway.

Join us for a day-long journey back to the 16th Century. On this special day, we are closed to the general public and only schools attend – your students have the entire village to themselves! They will meet characters and historical figures from the Renaissance period, participate in unique workshops, see artisan demonstrations, and learn what life was like in an English village during the 1500s.

This Field Trip Day is appropriate for all schools – public, private and home schools.

Patterns to Parts – Homeschool Workshop @ Southern Museum of Civil War & Locomotive History

Do you know how locomotives were built? Stop by this workshop to explore a real locomotive factory, create a locomotive part through casting, and experiment with your own casting techniques!

In this workshop, students will learn about the foundry casting process, will use wax to cast an object, and will discover how this process relates to locomotive construction. This program will focus on engineering and design.
